How music can speak to us?

Writer's picture: Matty BillMatty Bill

We all have that one song that takes us back to way back when a place, a person, a holiday, an instant memory, or an anthem for a season we were in. if I were to ask you tell me what you song is I know most of you would be like its this or that for example my holiday song is call watch the sun come up by Example and when I play that on the plane or the first morning I’m there I know I’m on holiday.

I love my music and especially knowing why lyrics where wrote I bore Lisa all the time with useless information on music that I know she really doesn’t care about and I’m just glad that I don’t have to explain this one to her because she introduced it to me and I want to read the opening lines of the song and just touch on things

Oh, how high would I climb mountains

If the mountains were where You hide

Oh, how far I'd scale the valleys

If You graced the other side

And, oh, how long have I chased rivers

From lowly seas to where they rise

Against the rush of grace descending

From the source of its supply

In that those lyrics I pick up on some things that we all can try and search for God and try to go to him by climbing mountains but God doesn’t hide from us we can sometimes know where the source of God’s grace is coming from and it is his word then sometimes we work agents it despite all good intentions by getting bogged down in life and its daily tasks or we find out self in a rut of doing the same routine every day and we just need to rest in Gods unrelenting good grace, because in there all our worries and fears don’t stand a chance. Then the lyrics go on to say.

'Cause in the highlands and the heartache

You're neither more or less inclined

I would search and stop at nothing

You're just not that hard to find

I will praise on the mountain

And I will praise you when the mountain is in my way

You're the summit where my feet are

This section reminds me that with God it doesn’t matter if you’re on cloud 9 or if you’re at rock bottom God is our ever-present help and he will never leave us or forsake us he will always meet you need

what does this song means to me I think sometimes its a conversation from Gods point of view to us at and Gods unrelenting desire to see each and every one of his children saved and other times I feel like its man’s frail attempt at a love song to God

What can we learn from this that it doesn’t matter to god what way your week has went it doesn’t matter what’s going on around you all that matters is that god is with you and just like he spoke to the sea and said peace be still he also speaks that over you and your life and all you have to do is rest in his faithfulness to you

In closing I just want you to read this just to remind you even in your darkest days you raise that hallelujah God will always meet you at your need and regardless of the season of your life remember to plug in to your favourite Christian playlist and really dwell on what you are listening to.

Whatever I walk through

Wherever I am

Your Name can move mountains

Wherever I stand

And if ever I walk through

The valley of death

I'll sing through the shadows

My song of ascent
